National Wild Turkey Federation Donation Knife - “The Gobbler”
I had an exciting opportunity last month to be part of an event for the National Wild Turkey Federation - the Rock Falls, IL chapter. I was contacted to contribute one of my custom knives for auction at a banquet event for members of this specific chapter. I was honored to be considered and was happy to make a knife to donate in order to support this important organization.
The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of wild turkey populations and their habitats across North America. Founded in 1973, the NWTF works to protect and enhance ecosystems through habitat restoration, wildlife management, and education initiatives. The organization also advocates for sustainable hunting practices, provides funding for wildlife research, and promotes outdoor recreation. With a strong network of volunteers, hunters, and conservationists, the NWTF aims to ensure the long-term survival of wild turkeys and other wildlife species while fostering a love for the outdoors and preserving natural landscapes.
One of the reasons this chapter reached out to me was because they loved my gritty and rough style that makes it clear this is a handmade item. With keeping that in mind, I wanted to make sure I made something that represented my style so it would appeal to their members. Since the members of this organization are avid hunters, often hunting large game, I wanted to design a knife that could stand up to their outdoor needs, while also being a functional work of art. I created a modified bowie knife called “The Gobbler” above out of 80CRV2 high carbon steel, which was properly heat treated to maintain a strong edge. I crafted a handle made from a mix of natural ebony wood and stabilized burl with a pop of green resin spacers. Like all of my knives, this included a handmade leather sheath with a built-in belt loop so you can easily keep this on your side for when you need it. This knife was very successful and brought a large donation, and while the winner didn’t agree for their photo to be shared, he seemed very pleased with what he received!
I’m thankful for the opportunity to be part of their event and I look forward to our continued relationship. If you’d like to become a member of one of their chapters throughout the United States or want to contribute to their mission, you can find more information here. I’m so appreciative of any opportunities that allow me to get my work in the hands of more people who will value the craftmanship and hard work I put into each piece. I love when I can collaborate with different organizations and am grateful for them wanting to partner with a local, small business owner like me!
Thanks for stopping by and stay sharp, folks!
